Prompt

By HubAI editorial team · Source checked: 24 October 2026

What does it mean?

The input that tells a generative system what to do. In a product, the full prompt may combine your message with instructions, retrieved material and previous conversation supplied by the application.

AN EVERYDAY EXAMPLE · ILLUSTRATIVE

Picture this

Instead of “write something about this”, ask for a 100-word customer update with the three confirmed facts, the audience and the action the reader should take.

Where you’ll come across it

Drafting, analysis, coding and image generation. State the task, give relevant material and say what the finished output should contain.

What it doesn’t mean

A well-written prompt cannot make missing evidence appear. If the system lacks a necessary fact, ask it to identify the gap rather than fill it with a guess.

FROM DEFINITION TO DOING

Make one request easier to answer

A short exercise · use fictional or non-sensitive material.

  1. Write a request with a clear task, audience and output format. Leave out private information.
  2. Add a short fictional example of the result you want. Keep the rest of the request unchanged.
  3. Compare the two answers for missing facts, unwanted promises and formatting mistakes.
Ask yourself

Did clearer instructions improve the result, or just make it sound more confident?
