Context window
By HubAI editorial team · Source checked: 24 October 2026What does it mean?
The amount of token-based context a model can handle in a request. It includes the material the system supplies, not just the sentence you type. Output capacity and product limits can be separate.
Picture this
You attach a long policy, earlier messages and a question. All that material competes for available context; the app may shorten or omit parts before the model sees them.
Where you’ll come across it
Reading long documents and maintaining a conversation. Ask which parts of a file are actually passed to the model and test questions about details at different locations.
What it doesn’t mean
A bigger window is not a promise that every detail will be found or remembered. Retrieval and careful document structure may help more than loading everything at once.
Can it find the detail in the middle?
A short exercise · use fictional or non-sensitive material.
- Create a fictional document with different facts near the beginning, middle and end.
- Ask a specific question about each location, then ask about a fact you did not include.
- Check whether the app supplied the whole document, retrieved parts of it or shortened it. A correct guess does not prove full coverage.
What material reached the model, and which answers can you trace back to it?
Did that make it clearer?
