Large language model

Also called: LLM

By HubAI editorial team · Source checked: 24 October 2026

What does it mean?

A language model trained at large scale to predict and generate sequences of tokens. A chatbot may use an LLM, but the model and the complete application are different things.

AN EVERYDAY EXAMPLE · ILLUSTRATIVE

Picture this

The model drafts a reply. The app around it may supply your documents, call a calendar tool and ask you to approve sending. Those extra actions are not explained by the model name alone.

Where you’ll come across it

Writing, summarising, coding and language-based interfaces. Compare candidates on the same real task, including how much correction each answer needs.

What it doesn’t mean

Large is not a guarantee of suitability. Cost, speed, data handling and reliable task completion may matter more than model size.

FROM DEFINITION TO DOING

Choose the task before the tool

A short exercise · use fictional or non-sensitive material.

  1. Pick one small job you already know how to do, such as turning rough notes into an agenda.
  2. Write down what a useful result must include. Use fictional notes for your first attempt.
  3. Compare the result with your checklist and count the changes you still need to make.
Ask yourself

Could you explain why this helped, without using the word AI?
