Short answer: a specialist route, not a UK authority guarantee
OpenAI launched Astra for Law on 17 September 2026 for selected law firms through Trusted Access. In ChatGPT and Codex, eligible users see GPT‑6 Astra Law in the model picker. OpenAI also names the planned API model gpt-6-astra-law, but says API access is coming soon. No public standalone price or self-service trial is listed. A UK firm should therefore treat this as a controlled evaluation candidate—not as proof that the product covers the authorities, citators or practice material required for England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.
What the product combines
Astra for Law combines GPT‑6 Astra with a legal search index, custom instructions, tools and partner-built plugins. OpenAI says the current search index covers US case law, statutes, regulations, court rules and administrative decisions drawn from more than 230 million URLs. The legal product page also describes connections to firm knowledge and tools, while ChatGPT for Word is generally available. This may reduce context switching, but a connected workflow is not automatically an authoritative or complete research workflow.
The UK buyer gap is jurisdiction, not interface
The launch materials describe a US-law index. They do not establish equivalent coverage of UK primary law, case treatment, commentary, court materials or firm subscriptions. A UK buyer should run jurisdiction-specific matters against the sources already trusted by the firm, including the correct primary source and any licensed research platform. Check whether the system finds controlling authority, distinguishes persuasive material, recognises negative treatment and reports when its source set is incomplete. Do not infer UK coverage from a general statement that the product is for law firms.
The benchmark is useful—but vendor-reported
OpenAI reports 54.0% overall correctness for Astra for Law against 38.7% for GPT‑6 Astra on a private Vals AI validation set, described as a 40% relative improvement. It also reports more reference cases and more relevant passages on audited targets. These figures are vendor-published and the private set cannot substitute for an independent matter test. The decision metric should be accepted legal work after qualified review: correct authority, accurate proposition, current treatment, usable citation, correction time and complete cost.
Data controls need matter-level verification
OpenAI says eligible law firms can use Zero Data Retention in the API and that ChatGPT Enterprise content is excluded from human review by default. Those statements do not resolve every privilege, confidentiality, conflict, residency, connector or retention question. Verify the signed contract and the exact route used by each matter. Apply least-privilege access to plugins and firm repositories, separate experimental work from client work, and preserve an auditable approval path without retaining unnecessary confidential content.
Plugins and Word can help—or widen the risk surface
OpenAI lists 26 partner-built plugins and makes ChatGPT for Word generally available. These can place AI closer to drafting, knowledge and document workflows. They also add permission boundaries, third-party terms and new paths for matter data. Review each connector separately: what it can read, what it can change, where data travels, who can authorise it and how access is removed. A plugin catalogue is not evidence that every integration is suitable for every firm or jurisdiction.
A UK legal pilot in seven checks
Freeze a small set of anonymised matters spanning research, contract analysis and drafting. Require the same source pack, jurisdiction and acceptance rule for Astra for Law and the current workflow. Score primary-authority recall, proposition-to-source accuracy, currency and treatment, citation format, unsupported claims, reviewer minutes and complete cost. Add a failure test for ambiguous jurisdiction and missing authority. Expand only when the specialist route improves accepted work without weakening privilege, accountability or source traceability.
