Guardrails

By HubAI editorial team · Source checked: 24 October 2026

What does it mean?

Controls intended to keep an AI system within acceptable boundaries. They can include input checks, output validation, restricted tools, approval steps and operational limits.

AN EVERYDAY EXAMPLE · ILLUSTRATIVE

Picture this

An assistant may draft a refund message, but the payment service refuses any refund outside the user’s authority. A prompt telling it to be careful is only one small part of the setup.

Where you’ll come across it

Reducing foreseeable risks in production applications. Test failures and attempts to bypass controls, not just the happy path.

What it doesn’t mean

The word guardrail can hide very different implementations. Ask which controls are enforced in code and which depend on the model following instructions.

FROM DEFINITION TO DOING

Find the point where someone must check

A short exercise · use fictional or non-sensitive material.

  1. Choose a harmless draft, such as an invitation with fictional names and dates.
  2. List the claims and actions separately: what must be true, and what would happen if you approved it?
  3. Check the claims against your notes. Keep sending, publishing and account changes behind a real approval step.
Ask yourself

Can a person see the evidence and stop the action before it happens?
