Google launched its Windows Gemini app on 10 September. The desktop shortcut brings the assistant closer to everyday work, but premium features, organisation access and native capabilities still have separate limits.

What changed
Google's 10 September announcement introduces Gemini for Windows, including an Alt + Space shortcut over the current task. Google describes drafting, connected Google-app work and image or video creation, with subscription and availability qualifications for selected features. Its claim that the app is lightweight is a vendor statement: HubAI has not measured its memory use, battery impact or responsiveness.
Check the PC and account first
The Windows help page specifies Windows 10 or later, at least 8 GB RAM, 200 MB free installation space and an internet connection. It accepts a personal Google Account, or a work or school account with administrator-enabled Gemini access. The desktop page lists x64 and ARM64 support. UK availability is supported by Google's country list and UK desktop page, but this is not a guarantee that every account can use every feature. Download through the official desktop page; installation instructions name GeminiSetup.exe.
Free access is not an all-features trial
Google lists a free Gemini tier alongside paid Google AI subscriptions. These are account entitlements, not proof that every desktop feature is free. The launch footnote places subscription, age and availability conditions on selected capabilities. This review did not establish a single complete UK checkout offer covering all promoted Windows features, so no universal GBP price or trial duration is quoted. Check the signed-in UK offer, renewal amount, included limits and the particular feature you need before paying. Existing subscriptions may already cover the intended task.
Windows and Mac are not interchangeable
Google's desktop page explicitly presents screen-context sharing, cross-app dictation and local-folder work as native macOS capabilities, with more native Windows functionality to follow. Do not purchase on the assumption that a Mac demonstration is a Windows commitment. The Windows release is also not a new API model identifier. Teams building software should evaluate the separate API and its terms rather than treating a desktop subscription as API access.
The important boundary is your account
Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says some data may be reviewed by people and warns against entering confidential information under the relevant consumer settings. It also says work and school accounts can have different data-handling terms. HubAI's practical advice is to confirm the actual signed-in account, administrator policy and connected-app permissions before using business material. A desktop shortcut does not establish UK data residency, eliminate retention or provide a compliance certificate. Start with authorised, non-sensitive test inputs and review the applicable terms.
HubAI buyer verdict: compare one finished job
For a consultant, marketer or small-business operator already using Google tools, the useful question is whether the desktop route removes friction from an approved task. Compare the same source-to-summary or draft-to-review job in your existing browser workflow and the Windows app. Record elapsed time, corrections, missing sources and interruptions, including any shortcut conflict. Keep the desktop route if it improves the accepted result; upgrade only if a specific needed feature is missing from the current plan. No savings or accuracy improvement is assumed.
Limits and editorial disclosure
